(1) Le problème de l’éliminativisme lexical: L’éliminativisme lexical (meaning eliminativism) soutient que les mots en tant que types sont dépourvus de sens littéral, autrement dit qu’aux entrées lexicales ne correspondent aucunes structures stables et partagées. A première vue contre-intuitive, cette thèse est en fait étonnamment plausible concernant la majorité des termes que nous employons. Elle n’est toutefois pas sans poser d’importants problèmes et doit être nuancée. Présentation en français.
(2) Aspect in performative contexts: Performatives are conceptually special in that they involve illocutionary acts that can be performed simply “by uttering a sentence containing an expression that names the type of speech act” (Searle 1989: 536), as in I (hereby) quit. In English, this special status is grammatically reflected in the marked use of the simple present with performatives, which contrasts with the preference of canonical present-time event reports for the present progressive (cf. *I talk right now versus I promise to quit). In Slavic, on the other hand, performatives do not normally behave differently from other types of present-time reports. In this talk, I present data from a large variety of languages on the aspectual properties of performative constructions, thereby arguing that the grammatical choices that speakers make are motivated by epistemic considerations – that is, to what extent speakers can conceive of a situation in its entirety or not. This typological study fits in a larger project that concentrates on non-temporal uses of aspect across languages. Présentation en anglais.
